Condemn Malaysian crackdown, US urged

LEADING human rights groups have demanded the US condemn Malaysia’s brutal crackdown on protesters calling for fair elections.

The call comes as US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton travels to the region for a summit this week of foreign ministers from East Asian nations.

Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch are among groups that have written to Mrs Clinton calling for the US to condemn harsh police tactics used a fortnight ago after some 50,000 Malaysians took to the streets demanding a clean-up of the country’s electoral laws.
